Project Introduction:

After a 23-year hiatus, the Taiwan Lantern Festival returned to its original birthplace, Taipei. This year’s theme, “Light up the future,” spans from MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing Station, Zhongxiao Dunhua Station, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Station, and City Hall Station to Taipei 101 Station. The event connects the East District and Xinyi commercial areas, integrating local businesses and key urban venues such as the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, and Taipei 101. The festival features four major exhibition areas: Central, Lights of the Future, Beacons of Light, and Fount of Light as well as twelve administrative district lantern areas in Taipei showcasing various lighting installations.

The Beacons of Light Display Zone of this year’s festival focuses on Taipei’s East District, highlighting concepts such as the city’s natural environment, cultural entertainment, equality and inclusivity, and architectural structures. It includes five main lanterns and 43 art pieces displayed in collaboration with local stores. Visitors can immerse themselves in art as they stroll through the streets and alleys of the East District, encountering artworks around every corner, in shop windows, and even inside the stores.

The planning of this lantern festival not only emphasizes the East District as a key area for contemporary art activities but also continues the unique alley culture that has developed over the years. Viewing the East District and Taipei City through the eyes of artists, the festival invites the public to explore the alleys and experience the distinctive character of the city.
